AUDITIONS
Out of Box Theatre is pleased to announce auditions for our return to the stage with TRASH DAY, directed by the playwright Dave Lauby.
Read this listing in its entirety. Please weigh all requirements carefully.

ABOUT THE PLAY: The Wolley family has lived for decades in their decaying Smyrna GA home, and throughout those years have been threatened repeatedly for eviction due to Grampa Wolley’s hoarding and the mountainous accumulation of collectibles (ie, trash) on their junk-strewn property. On the day when the city has delivered its final ultimatum- clean it up or be evicted in 30 days- new neighbors move into the house next door, single dad Mike Aubrey and his pre-teen daughter Allegrae, two displaced persons with a troubling story of their own. Emerging from the depths of the Wolley trash pile is 10 year-old Jackson Wolley, and the relationship which develops between this beanie baby-loving, stray cat adopting old-soul and regally-aloof Allegrae proves as heartbreaking as it is hilarious. Will the Wooley clan clean up their act in time to save their hard-scrabbled homestead? Will Jackson and Allegrae find tweenie love against the backdrop of human debris? And will it show in the end that not everything (nor everyone) that comes from a trash pile is trash?

ROLES
GLENDA (WOLLEY) FAGOT (pronounced “fahGOH”). Late 20s+. MawMaw and PawPaw Wolley’s mostly-grown daughter. A high-school dropout still living at home with her ten year-old son James. Kind and gentle in nature... until she isn’t. Attractive in an unassuming way, even in her Wal-Mart blouse. Like mother MawMaw, a ferocious defender of her family. Does the best she can as a single mom and worries that it isn’t enough. Not as unsophisticated as her parents, but clearly cut from the same homespun cloth.
JAMES “JACKSON” FAGOT. 10. Glenda’s son. An old soul with an addiction to beanie-babies. Cannot say no to a stray kitten. His peaceable demeanor and his unfortunate last name make him the frequent victim of bullying. A thoughtful and sensitive young man who understands that no one should be thought of as “trash,” even if they live amidst it. The most present person in his life is his absent father.
MIKE AUBREY. Late 30’s. The Wolleys’ next-door neighbor, father of Allegrae Aubrey. Standard-issue suburban American dad type. Looks like he should be pushing a lawnmower or driving an SUV in a car commercial. The stress of raising his contentious 13 year-old daughter is beginning to show. Non-judgemental, open-minded and long suffering. Not a “southern” bone in his body, thus setting the next-door Wolleys in stark contrast.
ALLEGRAE AUBREY 13. Mike’s daughter, and clearly the queen of the realm. Exasperated with everything and everyone, particularly her put-upon dad. Floats upon an air of superiority and holds the Wolley clan in disgust... or at least that’s her outer veneer. Unable to conceal her compassionate and sympathetic side, although she tries valiantly to do so. Engaged in a “frenemy” tug-of-war with next-door neighbor-boy James.
RAY ORNELLAS 30+. The assistant to the assistant city commissioner. Described by Glenda (his not-quite ex-girlfriend) as “a snake with a manpurse.” The city agent tasked with evicting the Wolleys from their soon-to-be condemned property, a job Ray enjoys a little too much. Not above negotiating a shady deal if it will get him what he wants- and what he wants is Glenda. If bad living doesn’t kill him, MawMaw will.
ASKAY 30+. Ray Ornellas’ faithful and obedient assistant. A businesslike and detail-driven functionary. If Ray requested it Askay would bow and salute. And more.
J. R. 12-13. The neighborhood bully. His criminal history is a daily work-in-progress. The frequent tormentor of James and the would-be conqueror of Allegrae. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
AARON 13-14. The “nice young man” of the neighborhood. Prince Valiant, at least in Allegrae’s eyes. The junior version of Mike Aubrey. More heroic in profile than he is in practice.
J. R.’s MOM 30-40. Down to earth and no-nonsense, the qualities necessary for handling wild animals such as her son. Do not arm wrestle her. You will lose.
J.R.’s GOONS 11+. If J.R. is the Wicked Witch of the West, then these kids are the flying monkeys, but on skateboards. Passionately committed to carrying out J.R.’s program of chaos.
The following roles are already cast:
MAWMAW (JOANNE) WOLLEY. 50+. The family matriarch, southern as cornbread but much saltier. An unvarnished, chain-smoking rustic who is quick with her opinions and even quicker at shouting down yours. Subtlety is a word unknown to her, a word she can neither spell nor pronounce. Has no concept of an indoor voice. Is not in the running for Miss Congeniality. Is not running, period. Fiercely defensive of her family, all of whom she is pissed off with at the moment.
PAWPAW (PAUL) WOLLEY. 50+. The dominant male of the Wolley clan, but only 2nd in command behind wife MawMaw. A chronic and incurable packrat. Buddha-like in physique but Bubba-like in temperament. Like MawMaw, PawPaw is rough around the edges and as unrefined as moonshine. Seldom seen wearing a shirt. Usually armed with a toilet plunger. At war with the world around him yet the enemy of no one in particular. A bear of a man, albeit a toothless one.
